Seriously, though, the best camera is the one you wish you’d brought with you when you’re forced to take shitty iPhone photos with some app that uses effects to make them look good. Yes, I’m guilty of this, but that doesn't mean I'm wrong.

They say the best camera is the one you always have with you. That is to say, people trying to sell an app for your iPhone say the best camera is the one you always have with you. Buy yourself a nice camera and you’ll want to take it everywhere. It’ll become part of you after a while. Some day, you might even stop producing utter crap. Not today, though.

Just one of those days where work is totally uninspiring. I’ve been on a bug-fixing spree for the last three weeks, and it’s finally beginning to crush my spirit. That being said, it’s nearly over and fun new projects are just round the corner. I suppose if I was a little better, I wouldn’t have to spend so long fixing bugs. And if I wasn’t so rushed to finish everything, I would be a little better. The magical circle (triangle?) of code.

Thought I’d treat myself to an early finish, then I saw the time and realised I was actually treating myself to a normal-time finish. Wandered round the house and snapped a few of my favourite details. Catdog ended up getting in the way of the first one, but it turned out OK, I suppose.

You’re going home. Now.

Annoyingly, I’ve become predictable even to myself, and I took a tonne of photos that I’ve already taken of other buildings before, so these are the “new” ones.

I don’t believe I’m at a stage in my life with my camera where I actually think these would look better with an overcast sky. Still, I’m not the sort of person to force it just because it’s what I want.

Today, I wanted to create an abstract, moody forest effect using remote flash.

I don’t know why, but when I’m at the in-laws’ house, I always get in the mood for abstracts. This is the head of the bed in Charlotte’s old room, with the SB-800 firing at a 45° angle towards the camera, which is in turn angled up towards the flash at 45°.

This whole setup was a great exercise to show Nikon’s genius product design. As soon as you get pro glass, you need to pro flash setup. The on-board flash is set to command with "zero" output (obviously it needs some output in order to trigger the flash), but at this range, the lens was casting a shadow over my subject. Annoying. I’ve taken a look, and for a mere £200, I can get an IR trigger that won’t affect the shot. This will also be useful for when I start increasing the size of my flash army and getting umbrellas and stands.

Just as you think the expense is over, more mounts up. Bloody cameras.
